Microsphere drugs are tiny spherical or sphere-like particles of skeletal type formed by dissolving or dispersing the drug in sphere-forming materials, with a particle size range of generally 1-250 µm, which can be used for oral administration, injection, nasal drip or subcutaneous implantation. Compared with common dosage forms, microspheres have the advantages of taste masking, improved drug stability, reduced drug irritation to the gastrointestinal tract, solidification of liquid drugs for easy application and storage, slow and controlled release and targeted drug delivery. With the biodegradability and controllability of degradation time of specific polymer materials, microspheres can be used for drug delivery to achieve ultra-long duration of slow and controlled release, and make the drug concentrated in the target area, which can improve drug efficacy, reduce its adverse effects and delay the drug delivery cycle, and improve the compliance of drug administration. According to the materials used in the preparation of microspheres, they can be divided into 3 major categories: synthetic polymer materials, natural polymer materials and inorganic materials.

The materials that can be used to prepare microneedles are various, including hard materials such as bioglass, silicon and stainless steel, and flexible materials such as polyethylene glycol and its derivatives, hyaluronic acid and its derivatives, gelatin and its derivatives, and chitosan, which have good biocompatibility.
